 Deep Roots Farm

Judy and Pam at the barnIn 2008 we started a small diversified produce farm on 2 acres of land in west Scarborough, Maine, called Deep Roots Farm. We offer a subscription-based CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program to small families interested in local produce on a regular basis. Our produce is naturally grown using  organic seeds, soil enrichments and compost. No agricultural chemicals or pesticides have been used on the land in over 20 years. We use sustainable methods and farm by our own labor, using primarily hand tools. Our goal is to bring fresh local produce from our farm directly to your table.

Members bought a seasonal share of farm produce in advance.  Each week from June through October, the families came to the farm to pick up their vegetables. We offered a variety of seasonal vegetables, which were freshly harvested for the pick-up day. Our CSA members especially appreciated our specialty salad greens such as a spicy mesclun mix, arugula, a colorful lettuce mix and red head lettuce! We picked, washed and bagged the salad greens fresh for each pick-up. As the season progressed, members enjoyed not only sugar snap peas, salad greens, radishes and swiss chard, but also gourmet green beans, broccoli, zucchini and summer squash, Sun Gold cherry tomatoes, regular tomatoes, carrots, beets, onions, parsnip, and winter squashes such as delicata, butternut, and scarlet kabocha which is sweet and smooth. See the CSA page for lists of seasonal produce.

Farm - Community Connections
In December the farm "adopted" a family and provided abundant food baskets of healthy food and fresh produce. The family of 6 was a refugee family living in transitional housing in Portland. Our CSA members donated food items to include in the basket - in fact, we had three full boxes of food! So, we donated two boxes to the family and the third box to Wayside Soup Kitchen at the Preble St. Resource Center. This was such a success that we intend to collect food items and extra farm produce throughout the season to donate to local food pantries and soup kitchens.

Farmer's Market
Pam at 1st Farm Market
Deep Roots Farm participated in the Scarborough Farmer's Market held behind the Scarborough High School for the last two summers. We sold our organic vegetables with a group of local vendors. The markets will be held on Sundays starting at 9 am. We generally attend twice a month from June - September. Check back here in Spring to find out the dates of the market and when we will be there.
